Iron Man: More than Mettle

The great big waves made by iron Man on its world-wide release last May 2008 can be attributed to factors that go beyond the mere size of this unique superhero, not even the hype brought about by the aggressive advertisement which preceded the movie’s release could account for the interest- both enthusiastic and skeptical. Mixed reviews from both extremes of the ‘movie critique spectrum’ surfaced right after the movie hit the movie theatres all over the world.

Those who did not enjoy seeing the film blamed their harsh verdict on prejudices against the star of the movie, Robert Downey Jr. Some parents were uncomfortable about having their kids idolize an actor who has been a known regular of their friendly neighborhood rehab centers. The ones who loved the movie appreciated it for a lot of reasons; being one of them, allow me to count the ways:

The movie was cool! This is an undeniable fact that even those who did not like the film would agree to. A walking, talking and flying piece of metals that can take bullets, blow things up and even make its own energy- what could be cooler?

It was refreshing. In a world of superheroes who were either serious as cancer and gruff as Scrooge or self-absorbed nerds, Tony Stark was a genius with an attitude. Although some may raise eyebrows at this, I believe Downey was perfect for the role. He brings in the perfect blend of quirkiness and intimidation.

It was well-casted. Downey was perfect. I cannot imagine anyone other than Gwyneth Paltrow pouring on the seemingly impersonal charm and seduction Pepper; I never imaged such a thing was even possible.
Lastly, we love Iron man for the same reason we love Bruce Wayne- aside from an insane amount of money, no super powers; he’s a self-made hero, literally.
